Excessive hair growth (hirsutism) is where women have thick, dark hair on their face, neck, chest, tummy, lower back, buttocks or thighs. It might be caused by a medical condition that can be treated. Most women get more hair on their face and body as they get older, particularly after the menopause. But this is finer hair and it's not the same as hirsutism.

This type of hair loss usually runs in the family. There are things you can try if your hair loss is causing you distress. But most treatments are not available on the NHS, so you'll have to pay for them.
